Useful for questions, reading notes and training preparation around a selected collection of documents. Source-first work makes checking evidence easier than unconstrained chat. Official help now uses the name Gemini Notebook. It does not determine whether your uploaded material is trustworthy.
Free plan and limits
The current Standard plan lists 100 notebooks per user and 50 sources per notebook. A source is limited to 500,000 words or 200MB for local uploads. Other generation allowances vary by plan; source capacity is not an audio or research generation quota.
Important limitations
Missing or outdated sources limit answer quality. Protected files may fail to import, and short sources may not produce passage-level citations. Uploading files does not complete a privacy review.
When to choose an alternative
Start with Perplexity for new public sources; compare ChatGPT or Claude for open-ended drafting. Separating discovery from source-limited questions often makes review clearer.
Alternative suggestions are editorial, task-based judgments, not standardized performance tests.
